With the daily running season now over we have taken the opportunity to start work on a number of significant projects ahead of the winter.
Firstly we have started relaying the down main line from Kingsmere to Lakeside as this track is now over 30 years old. This involves digging out the old track bed, laying a new base and then new trackwork using recycled plastic sleepers. A final bed of new ballast tamped into place completes the work. So far we have completed a third of the way with the rest to follow.
Lakeside station is also receiving attention with a completely new shelter being built covering the queueing area for the train. Made from strong wooden timbers fixed to a metal and concrete base the structure, when completed, will provide a dry area for passengers to wait for the next train, as well as the booking in area for the upcoming Santa Special trains this December.
